WHAT IS ISMO?

ISMO is an annual puzzle contest which consists of different kinds of puzzles of different levels organized by Eastern Star Bilingual School (ESBS) Math Department. The purpose of this contest is to boost enthusiasm towards Math and strengthen the critical thinking skills of students.

Anyone from primary or secondary school level can participate in this contest. Levels are as follows.

v The test consists of 20 puzzles and it requires some basic math skills like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

v Primary and Secondary level participants take different level questions according to their levels.

v Once students who participated before cannot participate again.

v The questions are both in English and Lao.

v The contest will be on 20th of March for all participants but in different session times.

v Primary level session will start at 9:00 am sharp.

v Secondary level session will start at 12:00 pm.

v Since the contest will start at 9:00 am sharp on the Contest day, no late students will be allowed to sit for the competition. For that reason, participants of each level are suggested to come at least 45 minutes earlier before the contest starts.

BEFORE THE COMPETITION

v A contestants must submit two recent photos (taken last 3 months) , A nomination certificate from their current school, on which student's name, his / her father's name, class and date / place of birth information are clearly mentioned.

v Application form with the required information filled until Application Deadline (6th of March 4:00 pm).

v The application form is available in ESBS office.

v Applicants are required to pay an application fee of 10000 Kip.

v The week prior to ISMO contest day applicants will receive an Identity card (ID card) that will give them the right to participate in the contest.

v This ID card is needed to be shown before the contest.

DURING THE COMPETITION

v Students should sit in their appropriate seats according to ID card number.

v No books, calculators, computers, cell-phone or other electronic devices are allowed to use during the contest. Students are permitted to use only writing tools and eraser.

v No participant is allowed to go around, talk to other participants, and share writing tools and/or erasers during the contest.

v For possible technical mistakes on contest paper the participant has the right to ask for a new one. For that reason students are suggested to go through the contest paper before starting to solve the puzzles. For possible paper change the Responsible teacher will be in charge.

v Contestants can ask questions only from Responsible teachers after raising their hands. Students are not allowed to shout or ask questions loudly.

v Contestants will remain in their seats until all test papers have been collected, regardless of whether they have finished solving the puzzles.

v Each correct answer will earn points specified next to the puzzles. In case of a draw, the number of highest scoring puzzles solved will considered.

v The contest duration is 1 hour and 30 minutes for each level

AFTER THE COMPETITION

v Results of the contest will be announced 2 weeks after the contest (5th of April 2010).

v There will be 3 grand prize winners for each level given in the table below and the top 20 scorers will receive special prizes.

v All participant school will be awarded with Participation certificates.

v Prizes will be given during the Award Ceremony in 10th of April-2010 in Cultural Hall at 7 pm.

v ESBS Math Department holds the right to disqualify any contestant who violates the above mentioned rules and conditions or any ethical rules during the test.

v To overcome the traffic problem, parking any vehicles inside ESBS will not be allowed.

v All participants are expected to have read and accepted the above rules and conditions.
